Accidental degeneracy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000108

A situation where two or more distinct quantum states of a system have the same energy, even though they are not related by any inherent symmetry of the system. This degeneracy arises from specific values of parameters in the Hamiltonian. It can be lifted by perturbations to the system.
