Hamiltonian operator

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005086

A quantum mechanical operator that corresponds to the total energy of a system, including both kinetic and potential energy. When this operator acts on the wavefunction of a system, the resulting eigenvalue is the system's total energy. The time-independent Schrödinger equation is an eigenvalue equation for the Hamiltonian operator, expressed as Ĥψ = Eψ.
