Halophiles
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005085
A class of extremophilic microorganisms that thrive and multiply in environments with very high concentrations of salt. These organisms possess specialized cellular mechanisms to balance the osmotic pressure exerted by their saline surroundings, preventing water loss from their cells. Halophiles are found in locations such as salt lakes, solar salterns, and deep-sea brine pools, with some species requiring sodium chloride concentrations above 3 molar to grow.
