Halonium ions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005084
Cations of the form R2X+, in which a positively charged halogen atom (bromonium, chloronium, fluoronium or iodonium) is bonded to two carbon groups, either in an open chain, as in diaryliodonium salts, or in a ring. The three-membered cyclic type is called a halirenium ion and forms as an intermediate when halogens add to alkenes, giving anti addition products.
