Episulfonium ions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004035
Cationic three-membered rings made of two carbon atoms and one positively charged, trivalent sulfur atom that carries a single further substituent, also called thiiranium ions. They form as intermediates when sulfenyl halides add to alkenes and in neighboring-group participation by sulfur, as in sulfur mustards. Their strained ring is opened by nucleophiles, which gives trans addition products.
