Mustards

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007705

A class of organic compounds containing a bis(2-haloethyl)amino or bis(2-haloethyl)sulfide functional group. These compounds are highly reactive electrophiles that can alkylate biological macromolecules, particularly DNA, due to the formation of reactive aziridinium or episulfonium ions. Nitrogen mustards are used as chemotherapeutic agents, while sulfur mustards are known for their vesicant properties.
