Reactive nitrogen species
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009980
A group of highly reactive molecules containing nitrogen that are derived from nitric oxide or its metabolites. These species are involved in cellular signaling and defense mechanisms, but at elevated concentrations, they can induce nitrosative stress by modifying proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Key examples include peroxynitrite (ONOO−), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3), which are distinct from reactive oxygen species that are centered on oxygen chemistry.
