Denitrification
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002998
A microbial process in which nitrate (NO3-) is reduced to gaseous nitrogen compounds, such as dinitrogen (N2) or nitrous oxide (N2O). This occurs under anaerobic conditions by certain bacteria that use nitrate as an electron acceptor in respiration. Denitrification is a key step in the global nitrogen cycle, returning fixed nitrogen to the atmosphere.
