Denitrification

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007626

1. The biochemical reduction of nitrate or nitrite to gaseous nitrogen, either as molecular nitrogen or as an oxide of nitrogen.

2. The anaerobic biological reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas.

3. The biochemical conversion of nitrate and nitrite nitrogen in the soil dissolved in water to gaseous nitrogen.

4. The loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds.

5. The biological reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria in soil.

6. A process performed by a few species of anaerobic soil bacteria in which nitrite or nitrate is converted to nitrogen gas (N2) or nitrous oxide (N2O). Both N2 and N2O are volatile and lost to the atmosphere.

7. Loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds.

8. Bacterial reduction of nitrite to gaseous nitrogen under anaerobic conditions.

9. The chemical or biochemical reductin of nitrate or nitrite to gaseous nitrogen, either as molecular nitrogen or as an oxide of nitrogen.

10. Process by which nitrates are reduced to gaseous nitrogen by facultative anaerobes.

11. The biological reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas by bacteria in soil.
