Nitrogen Fixation

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018645

1. The biological or chemical process by which elemental nitrogen from the air is converted to organic or available nitrogen.

2. The process in which bacteria convert biologically unusable nitrogen gas (N2) into biologically usable ammonia (NH3) and nitrates (NO3-).

3. Conversion of atmospheric nitrogen gas into forms useful to plants and other organisms by lightning, bacteria, and blue-green algae; it is part of the nitrogen cycle.

4. The process in certain bacteria, fungi, and cyanobacteria converting free atmospheric nitrogen to biologically usable forms of nitrogen, such as ammonia; nitrates; and amino compounds

5. The biological reduction of molecular nitrogen to chemical forms that can be used by organisms in the synthesis of organic molecules.
