Nitrogen fixation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007551

The process by which atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted into ammonia (NH3) or other nitrogen compounds that can be assimilated by living organisms. This conversion can occur through biological processes carried out by certain microorganisms, such as bacteria in soil or root nodules, or through abiotic processes like lightning strikes. Industrial nitrogen fixation, such as the Haber-Bosch process, also contributes significantly to the global nitrogen budget.
