Ammonification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003474
The biological process by which organic nitrogen compounds are converted into ammonia (NH3) or ammonium ions (NH4+). This decomposition is carried out by bacteria and fungi in the soil and water, releasing nitrogen from decaying organic matter. It is a key step in the nitrogen cycle, making nitrogen available for plant uptake.
