Nitrogen cycle
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007549
The biogeochemical cycle describing the transformation and movement of nitrogen between the atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems, and marine environments. Key processes include nitrogen fixation, where atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted to ammonia; nitrification; denitrification, which returns N2 to the atmosphere; and assimilation by organisms. The atmosphere is the largest reservoir of nitrogen, containing approximately 78% as N2 gas.
