A colorless, odorless, and tasteless diatomic gas, N2, that constitutes approximately 78% of Earth's atmosphere by volume. It is relatively unreactive in its molecular form but is converted into reactive nitrogen compounds through biological and atmospheric processes. Nitrogen is an essential element for all living organisms, forming proteins and nucleic acids.
