Nitrogen oxides
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007552
A group of highly reactive gases containing nitrogen and oxygen atoms, primarily nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). They are formed during high-temperature combustion processes, such as in vehicle engines and power plants, and also by natural sources like lightning. Nitrogen oxides contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, acid rain, and fine particulate matter.
