Denitrification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004918
A microbial process in which nitrates are reduced to gaseous nitrogen compounds, such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and molecular nitrogen (N2), by anaerobic bacteria. This process is a key component of the global nitrogen cycle, returning nitrogen from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to the atmosphere. It occurs primarily in oxygen-depleted environments like waterlogged soils and sediments.
