Anaerobic condition

An environmental state characterized by the complete absence of free molecular oxygen. In atmospheric science, this condition can occur in certain microclimates or within specific biological processes, such as in waterlogged soils or deep within snowpacks. Anaerobic decomposition of organic matter releases gases like methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
