A type of bog or wetland ecosystem characterized by acidic, waterlogged soil and a dense growth of sphagnum moss, sedges, and stunted trees. It forms in cold, poorly drained regions where decomposition of organic matter is slow. This environment contributes to the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.
