Ammonium ion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003476
A positively charged polyatomic ion with the chemical formula NH4+. In the atmosphere, it forms when ammonia gas (NH3) reacts with acidic compounds like sulfuric or nitric acid, neutralizing them to form ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate aerosols. These ammonium salts are a major component of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), affecting air quality, human health, and Earth's radiative balance.
