Nitrogen Dioxide

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018644

1. A chemical that results from nitric oxide combining with oxygen in the atmosphere; a major component of photochemical smog.

2. The result of nitric oxide combining with oxygen in the atmosphere; major component of photochemical smog.

3. Oxides of nitrogen, mainly NO2 and NO. NO2 is a respiratory irritant, and also a precursor to ozone (or, smog) formation. The main source of NOx emissions into the atmosphere are combustion sources, such as cars, power plants, and industrial engines.

4. A brownish, highly reactive gas which is present in urban atmospheres. NO₂ is formed in the atmosphere from emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). NOx forms when fuel is burned at high temperatures. The two major NOx emission categories are transportation sources (primarily motor vehicles) and stationary fuel combustion sources, such as electric utilities and industrial boilers.

5. NO2. [40 CFR 53.1 (CFR 2013)]

6. A chemical that results from nitric oxide combining with oxygen in the atmosphere; a major component of photochemical smog. One of the six "criteria" pollutants for which EPA has set national ambient air quality standards.

7. The environmental burden indicator for NO₂ measures how much surface level NO₂ people might be exposed to in terms of annual average concentration in parts per billion. EJScreen presents surface level NO₂ concentrations using percentile rank, ranging from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest). This indicator does not designate compliance with the national ambient air quality standard for NO₂.

8. For more details on the NO₂ indicator, including why it is important and what you can do moving forward, please visit the EJScreen Indicator Overview for NO₂ (https://www.epa.gov/ejscreen/ejscreen-indicator-overviews-nitrogen-dioxide-no2).
