Nitrogen Oxide
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018647
1. The result of photochemical reactions of nitric oxide in ambient air; major component of photochemical smog. Product of combustion from transportation and stationary sources and a major contributor to the formation of ozone in the troposphere and to acid deposition.
2. A generic term for the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution, namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). These gases contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain, as well as tropospheric ozone.
