Nitrification

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007953

The biological oxidation of ammonia to nitrite, followed by the oxidation of the nitrite to nitrate. This two-step process is carried out by distinct groups of microorganisms in soil and aquatic environments. The first step is performed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, such as those from the genus Nitrosomonas, while the second is completed by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, like Nitrobacter.
