Reperfusion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010190
The restoration of blood flow to an organ or tissue that has experienced a period of ischemia, or inadequate blood supply. While necessary to prevent irreversible cell death from hypoxia, the reintroduction of oxygen can paradoxically cause additional cellular damage, a phenomenon known as reperfusion injury. This secondary injury is mediated by inflammation and the formation of reactive oxygen species, which damage lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids within the cells.
