Sulfenium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011550

An incorrect name sometimes applied to sulfenylium ions, the cations of formula RS+ in which a single organic group is bonded to a positively charged sulfur atom. These cations are strongly electrophilic and transient, appearing as intermediates when sulfenyl halides add to alkenes, where they are usually captured as bridged thiiranium ions. The preferred names are sulfenylium or sulfanylium ions.
