Vinylic cations
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012579
Carbocations of the form R2C=C+-R, in which the positively charged carbon is one end of a carbon-carbon double bond and has only two substituents. The charged carbon is sp-hybridised and the ion is linear at that centre, which makes it less stable than a comparable alkyl cation. Vinylic cations arise in the solvolysis of vinylic halides and sulfonates and in electrophilic additions to alkynes.
