Alkyl cation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000400
A positively charged organic ion derived from an alkane by the removal of a hydride ion or the protonation of an alkene, where the positive charge resides on a carbon atom. These species are highly reactive intermediates in many organic reactions. Their stability generally increases with increasing substitution on the positively charged carbon atom.
