Alkyl radicals

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000402

Neutral chemical species that possess an unpaired electron on a carbon atom, derived from an alkane by homolytic cleavage of a carbon-hydrogen bond. These highly reactive intermediates are involved in many free-radical reactions, such as combustion and polymerization. The methyl radical (•CH3) is the simplest example.
