This unpaired electron makes the species paramagnetic and generally highly reactive, causing it to act as a transient intermediate in many chemical reactions. The presence of the unpaired electron is indicated in chemical formulas by a superscript dot, as in •CH3 for the methyl radical or Cl• for a chlorine atom.",
