Isolobal
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006197
Describing molecular fragments that possess the same number of frontier orbitals of identical symmetry, similar energy, and similar shape. This similarity in their valence orbitals allows them to replace one another in a molecule without significantly altering the overall bonding pattern. For example, a CH3 group is isolobal with a hydrogen atom in many contexts.
