Nonbonding molecular orbital
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008005
A molecular orbital whose energy is approximately the same as that of the atomic orbitals from which it is formed, and which does not contribute significantly to bonding or antibonding between atoms. Electrons in these orbitals are localized primarily on one atom or a small group of atoms. These orbitals are often associated with lone pairs of electrons.
