Nonbonded interactions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008004

Forces between atoms in a molecule or between molecules that are not connected by covalent bonds. These interactions include van der Waals forces (comprising London dispersion forces and dipole-dipole interactions), hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic forces between charged or polarized sites. The collective effect of these weaker forces dictates the three-dimensional shape (conformation) of large molecules like proteins and nucleic acids and governs the packing of molecules in condensed phases.
