Eclipsing strain

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003545

The destabilization of a molecule arising from the repulsive interactions between electron clouds of substituents on adjacent atoms when they are in an eclipsed conformation. This strain is a component of torsional strain and contributes to the overall conformational energy of a molecule. It is typically observed in acyclic systems where rotation around a single bond is possible, such as in ethane.
