Strain-induced transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011455
A phase transition in a solid material that is directly caused by the application of mechanical strain. The applied strain modifies the Gibbs free energy of the system, favoring a different crystal structure or state over the original one. This phenomenon is distinct from temperature or pressure-induced transitions and is observed in materials like shape-memory alloys and certain ferroelectrics, where mechanical deformation triggers a martensitic transformation.
