Strand break
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011456
A disruption in the phosphodiester backbone of a nucleic acid molecule, such as DNA or RNA. This can occur as a single-strand break, affecting one of the two strands, or a double-strand break, affecting both strands simultaneously. Strand breaks are often induced by radiation or chemical agents and can have serious biological consequences.
