Sulfenylium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011553

Cations of the formula RS+, with a single organic group on a positively charged sulfur atom; the synonymous name is sulfanylium ion. They are strongly electrophilic transient species, best known as the reactive form of sulfenyl halides and related reagents in additions to alkenes. Adding to a double bond, the ion forms a bridged three-membered thiiranium ion, which a nucleophile then opens.
