Sulfenic acids
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011549
Organosulfur compounds of the formula RSOH, with a hydroxyl group on divalent sulfur, the lowest oxidation level in the series of sulfenic, sulfinic and sulfonic acids. Most are too reactive to isolate, because two molecules condense with loss of water to form a thiosulfinate, RS(O)SR, so they appear as intermediates in thiol oxidation. Cysteine sulfenic acid is a reversible modification of protein thiols.
