Halirenium ions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005078
Cyclic, three-membered cationic intermediates formed during the electrophilic addition of a halogen to an alkene. These ions feature a halogen atom bonded to two carbon atoms of the original double bond, forming a strained ring structure. The positive charge is formally localized on the halogen atom, which is typically bromine or chlorine.
