Markownikoff rule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006961
A principle in organic chemistry that describes the regioselectivity of electrophilic addition reactions to unsymmetrical alkenes. It states that in the addition of HX (where X is a halogen) to an alkene, the hydrogen atom adds to the carbon atom of the double bond that already has the greater number of hydrogen atoms. This leads to the formation of the more stable carbocation intermediate.
