Heterolysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005254
The cleavage of a covalent bond in which both of the bonding electrons are retained by one of the fragments, resulting in the formation of a cation and an anion. This process is also known as heterolytic cleavage. It is a common mechanism in many organic reactions, particularly those involving polar reagents.
