Mesolytic cleavage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007215
Fission of a bond within a radical cation or radical anion that yields a neutral radical together with an ion, as when a radical cation splits into a radical and a cation or a radical anion splits into a radical and an anion. The name reflects the double character of the step: it may be formally counted as homolysis or as heterolysis according to which fragment is credited with the bonding electrons. In the electrochemical reduction of an alkyl halide, the radical anion R-X splits into R and X-.
