Electrofuge
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003682
A leaving group that detaches from a molecule without the electron pair from its former covalent bond. This departure results in the electrofuge becoming a cation, or a neutral species if it was originally an anion. The process is a feature of electrophilic substitution reactions, where a species such as a proton (H+) or a metal cation departs, in contrast to a nucleofuge which retains the bonding electrons.
