Nucleofuge
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008133
A leaving group that departs from a substrate with the electron pair that formed the bond. The ability of a group to act as a nucleofuge, its nucleofugality, is related to the stability of the anion or neutral molecule it forms upon departure. Good nucleofuges are the conjugate bases of strong acids; for instance, iodide (I⁻) and tosylate (TsO⁻) are excellent nucleofuges, while hydroxide (OH⁻), the conjugate base of the weak acid water, is a poor one.
