Heterologous antigen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005253

A cross-reacting antigen: one that binds an antibody raised against a different antigen because it carries an epitope shared with, or resembling part of, the original antigen. Cross-reaction of this kind underlies heterophile antibody responses, and it can explain immune reactions directed at self components that mimic a foreign antigen.
