Heterophile antigen
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005269
An antigen that is present in more than one species but is structurally similar enough to elicit cross-reactive antibodies. These antibodies, known as heterophile antibodies, can react with antigens from a different species than the one that stimulated their production. A well-known example is the Forssman antigen, found in guinea pig organs and sheep red blood cells.
