Heteroantigen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005228

An antigen that is shared between different species, meaning it can elicit an immune response in one species when introduced from another. These antigens often have similar molecular structures across phylogenetically unrelated organisms, leading to cross-reactivity of antibodies. A well-known example is the Forssman antigen, found in guinea pig organs and sheep red blood cells, which can induce antibodies that react with both.
