Heterophile antibody
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005268
An antibody that reacts with antigens from unrelated species, or with antigens that are structurally similar but not identical to the original antigen that stimulated its production. These antibodies can sometimes cause false positive results in diagnostic tests due to their broad reactivity. A well-known example is the antibody produced in infectious mononucleosis that reacts with sheep red blood cells.
