Cross-reacting antibody

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002728

An antibody that binds to more than one antigen, typically because the antigens share similar structural features or epitopes. This phenomenon can lead to false positive results in diagnostic tests or contribute to autoimmune diseases when antibodies against a foreign antigen also target self-antigens. The degree of cross-reactivity depends on the similarity between the antigenic determinants.
