Heterophagy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005267
The process by which a cell engulfs and degrades extracellular material, such as pathogens or cellular debris, through phagocytosis or endocytosis. The ingested material is enclosed within a phagosome or endosome, which then fuses with a lysosome. Lysosomal enzymes subsequently break down the foreign substances into smaller molecules for recycling or excretion.
