Lysosome

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006856

A membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells that contains a variety of hydrolytic enzymes capable of breaking down waste materials, cellular debris, and foreign invaders. It functions as the cell's recycling center, digesting macromolecules into their basic components for reuse or excretion. The internal environment of a lysosome is acidic, maintained by proton pumps in its membrane.
