Organelle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008308
A specialized subunit within a cell that performs a specific function, analogous to an organ in the body. Organelles are typically enclosed by their own lipid membranes, separating their internal environment from the rest of the cytoplasm. Examples include mitochondria for energy production and the endoplasmic reticulum for protein synthesis.
Specialized subcellular structures within eukaryotic cells that perform distinct functions necessary for the cell's survival and activity. These compartments are typically membrane-bound and include structures like mitochondria, which generate energy, and chloroplasts, which perform photosynthesis in plant cells. Each organelle contributes to the overall metabolic and structural integrity of the cell.
